Snowflake architecture in 5 minutes

Snowflake has three layers:

1. Database storage — columnar micro-partitions in cloud object storage.
2. Query processing — virtual warehouses (MPP clusters).
3. Cloud services — metadata, security, optimisation and transactions.

Because compute is separate, the BI team and the ETL jobs can run on different warehouses without slowing each other down.
